Rashis — The Twelve Zodiac Signs.

The Rashis are the twelve 30-degree divisions of the sidereal zodiac used in Jyotish. Every Graha, house cusp and chart point falls within one of these twelve signs.

Sidereal vs. tropical zodiac

Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars, rather than the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology, which is anchored to the seasons. The difference between them — the ayanamsa — is currently around 24 degrees and grows slowly over time due to the precession of the equinoxes. This is why a person's Rashi in Jyotish is often one sign "earlier" than their Western sun sign.

Rashi vs. Lagna vs. Moon sign

A single chart involves several different Rashi placements at once: the Lagna (the Rashi rising on the eastern horizon at birth), the Moon Rashi (the sign the Moon occupied), the Sun Rashi, and the Rashi of every other Graha. Jyotish typically gives more weight to the Lagna and Moon Rashi than to the Sun Rashi alone, unlike Western astrology's emphasis on the sun sign.

Rashis and the Bhavas

In most chart styles, each Rashi also corresponds to a house count from the Lagna, linking the sign system directly to the Bhava (house) framework used for life-area interpretation.

Frequently asked questions

Rashis, in plain language.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sun sign?

Because Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac and Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. The roughly 24-degree gap between them (the ayanamsa) often shifts a person's sign back by about one month's worth of the year.

Is Moon Rashi more important than Sun Rashi in Jyotish?

Traditionally, yes — the Moon Rashi and Lagna are usually given more interpretive weight than the Sun Rashi in Vedic astrology.

How often does the Moon change Rashi?

Roughly every 2.25 days, since the Moon completes a full sidereal cycle through all twelve Rashis in about 27.3 days.

Does Prajvia use sidereal or tropical positions?

Prajvia's Jyotish calculations use the sidereal zodiac with a Lahiri-style ayanamsa, consistent with mainstream Vedic astrology practice.
